A timing belt is a rubber belt with teeth that keeps the crankshaft and camshaft(s) synchronized. A timing chain is a metal chain — similar to a bicycle chain — that does the same job. Both wear out; chains just do it more slowly.
Most Japanese brands (Toyota, Honda, Subaru) transitioned to chains in the 2000s–2010s. European brands (BMW, Mercedes, VW) have used both. Ford EcoBoost engines use a chain. Older vehicles (pre-2005) more commonly use belts. The quickest way to check: if the service interval says to replace it at 60,000–100,000 miles, it's a belt. Chains don't have a scheduled replacement interval.
Most timing belts should be replaced every 60,000–90,000 miles or 5–7 years, whichever comes first. Age matters — a belt with 60,000 miles but 8 years old should still be replaced. Always replace the water pump, tensioner, and idler pulley at the same time since the labor is already done.
On interference engines (most modern engines), a belt failure causes the pistons and valves to collide — resulting in bent valves and a repair bill of $2,000–5,000+. On non-interference engines, the engine simply stops. To find out which type your engine is, search your year/make/model + 'interference engine'.
Timing belt job (with water pump, tensioner, seals): $500–1,200 at a shop. The parts cost $100–300; it's all labor. DIY is possible but requires mechanical confidence and manufacturer-specific tools. It's the one maintenance job where professional installation is recommended for most owners.
